I actually refinish a lot of aluminum(big tankers, gas tanks, wheels, etc). ShakaShaun is right, sand with the grain starting with whatever will take the cross grain scratches out. Work your way up to at least 2500 grit paper at a minimum if you want it mirror shiny. From there its wool pad and a heavy grit compound and work your way into less grainy stuff until the marks are removed from the last step. My last set of wheels was over 25+ hours in polishing alone, btw.
